Now based in Berlin, Adolf Smári Unnarsson (b.1993) is an Icelandic writer and theatre director. After studying at the Iceland University of the Arts, he graduated as a director in 2023 from the prestigious theatre academy DAMU in Prague.

His works have been performed in Iceland (The National Theatre of Iceland, Tjarnarbíó Theatre), Poland (Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski) and the Czech Republic (Divadlo DISK) and have been translated into Czech, Danish, English, German, Polish and Swedish.

He was nominated as Director of the year and Newcomer of the year at the Icelandic Theatre Awards 2021 (Gríman) for his direction of the contemporary opera Ekkert er sorglegra en manneskjan – (Nothing is more tragic than a human being) by the Icelandic composer Friðrik Margrétar-Guðmundsson.

His first novel, Um lífsspeki Abba og Tolteka (Eða líf mitt sem Olof Palme) was published in 2017 by Benedikt Bókaútgáfa, his second novel Auðlesin was published by Forlagið in 2022.

In October 2022, the National Theatre of Iceland premiered his play Nokkur augnablik um nótt – directed by Ólafur Egill Egilsson.
